Black+Decker portable air conditioning
The American power-tool name on a broad range of sturdy, mid-priced portable air conditioners that do the basics well.
Mid-market portables from a name you know
The Black+Decker portable air conditioner to look at is the BXAC40008GB 12,000 BTU, which we have reviewed: fast, effective cooling for around £399, as long as you can live with the noise. We rate it 3.9 out of 5. If quiet matters more, compare it with our best portable air conditioners.
Black+Decker is an American brand founded in Baltimore in 1910, best known worldwide for power tools and now part of the Stanley Black & Decker group. In the UK its home range includes portable air conditioners: monobloc units that cool a single room and vent the hot air out through a window hose, sold across the big online and high-street retailers.
The portables are mid-market rather than rock-bottom or premium, with a broad line-up sized from small bedrooms to larger living rooms and the usual cooling, fan and dehumidifier modes. They trade on a familiar, dependable name rather than specialist cooling engineering, so a monobloc's noise and efficiency limits still apply, but as a straightforward portable from a brand people trust they hold up well.
Strengths and watch-outs
Strengths
- ✓A well-known, trusted American brand with wide UK availability
- ✓A broad portable range covering small bedrooms to larger living rooms
- ✓Sensible mid-market pricing and familiar, no-nonsense design
Watch-outs
- !Best known for power tools, not climate control
- !Portable monoblocs, so efficiency and noise lag behind a fitted split
- !The AC range trades on the brand name rather than cooling heritage
