EcoFlow air conditioners
A portable power company whose small, battery-ready Wave units cool and heat a small room well, at a steep price for the cooling you get.
Battery know-how, applied to a small portable
EcoFlow is a portable power company, founded in 2017 by a group of battery engineers, best known for its power stations, solar panels and home battery kit. Air conditioning is a small sideline built on that expertise: the Wave range consists of compact dual-duct portables that cool, heat and dehumidify, and can run from the mains or from a clip-on battery. That makes them unusual among the portables we cover, because they are designed as much for camping, vans and off-grid cabins as for the home.
The current model is the Wave 3, which offers 1.8 kW (6,100 BTU) of cooling and 2 kW of heating and lists at £799 for the unit, or £1,299 with its 1,024 Wh battery. It replaced the Wave 2, a smaller 1.5 kW (5,100 BTU) unit that EcoFlow UK no longer sells new, so treat any Wave 2 you see as old or second-hand stock. For a home buyer the honest picture is a well-made, quiet unit for a box room, home office or garden room, with useful heating for the shoulder seasons, but one that costs about twice as much as a conventional portable with more cooling. It earns its premium only if the battery, the heating or the sealed dual-duct design matter to you.
Strengths and watch-outs
Strengths
- ✓Dual-duct design that keeps the room sealed rather than pulling warm air in from elsewhere
- ✓Heat pump heating as standard, cheap to run in spring and autumn
- ✓Optional battery with solar and car charging, drawn from its power station know-how
- ✓Compact and quiet in sleep mode, with app control over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Watch-outs
- !Expensive for the cooling you get; a conventional portable gives more for less
- !Small capacity, so best in rooms of up to about 12 to 15 m²
- !A one-model range, and UK stock has been patchy, with sellers on pre-order or back-order
- !Two ducts to route and seal, and a small condensate reservoir to manage
