Hitachi air conditioning

★ 4/5 Company founded 1910

A dependable, well-priced range, now built by Bosch Home Comfort Group under the Hitachi name. It runs from value units up to a genuinely high-spec, near-silent flagship.

About the brand

Hitachi engineering, now backed by Bosch

Hitachi was founded in Japan in 1910 and grew into one of the country's largest industrial and electronics groups. Its air conditioning business is now part of Bosch Home Comfort Group, which took full ownership in August 2025 and builds and backs the range under the Hitachi name. For a buyer, that means Hitachi-branded, Hitachi-engineered units with a large European parent behind them.

The current UK residential range is airHome, a family of wall-mounted single splits on lower-impact R32 refrigerant. It ladders from the value airHome 200 up to the airHome 800 flagship, which reaches the top A+++ rating for cooling and heating, a SCOP of around 5.2 and night-mode running as quiet as 19 dB(A). Most models add Wi-Fi and app control through airCloud Home, with Alexa and Google Home support, and Hitachi's FrostWash self-cleaning helps keep the unit hygienic between services.

The catch is profile rather than product. Hitachi is quoted less often than Daikin or Mitsubishi Electric in UK homes, with a smaller accredited installer network, so it appears in fewer quotes and there is less independent review coverage to compare. Where it is offered, it tends to be a pragmatic, well-priced choice, and the top of the range is genuinely high-spec rather than merely mid-market. The standard warranty is three years, subject to installation by a qualified installer.

Strengths and watch-outs

Strengths

  • Range spans value to a genuinely high-spec flagship: the airHome 800 reaches A+++ with a SCOP around 5.2
  • Quiet operation, with the airHome 600 and 800 down to around 19 dB(A) in night mode
  • FrostWash self-cleaning and airCloud Home app control, with Alexa and Google Home support
  • Well priced against the premium Japanese names, on lower-impact R32 refrigerant

Watch-outs

  • !Lower UK profile and a smaller installer network than Daikin or Mitsubishi Electric, so it features in fewer quotes
  • !Top efficiency and the quietest running sit on the pricier airHome 600 and 800; the 200 and 400 are A++
  • !Fewer designer finishes than the premium design-led ranges
