Air cooler vs air conditioner: do air coolers actually work?
An honest UK comparison of evaporative air coolers, portable air conditioners, fans and splits, so you spend your money on cooling that works in a British summer.
An air cooler and an air conditioner are not the same product, and the difference matters more in Britain than almost anywhere. An air cooler is an evaporative unit: a fan that blows air over a wet pad to cool it by a few degrees. An air conditioner uses refrigerant to actively pull heat out of a room and dump it outside, cooling far more and drying the air as it goes. For a UK home, an air conditioner is the reliable choice. An air cooler only helps on hot, dry days, and our summers are rarely dry.
So do air coolers work? A little. On a genuinely dry day one can drop the air it blows at you by 2 to 5°C, for pennies an hour. But it adds humidity rather than removing it, it cools the air near it rather than the whole room, and on a muggy British afternoon, exactly when you want relief, its effect fades to almost nothing. The short version: a fan does not cool a room, it just moves air past your skin. An air cooler does slightly better by adding evaporative cooling, but it is far closer to a fan than to air conditioning. Only a portable or fixed air conditioner genuinely lowers a room's temperature and takes moisture out of the air.

An air cooler is not a fan, and not air conditioning
This is where money gets wasted, because all three get lumped together in the shops.
A fan moves air. It does not change the temperature at all. It feels cooler because moving air helps sweat evaporate off your skin, which is genuinely useful up to about 35°C, but the room is exactly as warm as before. We cover that trade-off in full in our guide to air conditioning vs fans.
An air cooler (properly, an evaporative cooler) is a fan with a water tank. It cools the air it blows by a few degrees, so it does a little more than a fan, but it also puts moisture into the room. It has no refrigerant, no compressor and no exhaust hose.
An air conditioner works like a fridge. It uses a refrigerant circuit to draw heat out of the room and move it outside, which is why a portable air conditioner needs a window hose and a split needs an outdoor unit. It cools far more, holds a set temperature, and dries the air instead of dampening it.

How an air cooler actually works
Inside an air cooler is a water tank, a wet honeycomb pad and a fan. The fan pulls warm room air through the damp pad. As the water evaporates it absorbs heat from that air, and slightly cooler, more humid air is blown back out.
It is the same physics as stepping out of a swimming pool and feeling cold in a breeze. And it comes with the same catch: evaporation only cools well when the surrounding air is dry enough to accept more moisture. That single fact decides whether an air cooler is worth buying in the UK.
Because it draws on evaporation, an air cooler works best positioned near an open window or door, so it keeps pulling in fresher, drier air rather than recycling the damp air it has just created. That is the opposite of how you would run an air conditioner, which wants the room shut.
Do air coolers work in the UK? The humidity problem
Here is the honest answer. An air cooler works in the UK, but mostly on the few hot, dry days we get, and barely at all on the humid ones.
The drier the air, the more it can cool. The more humid the air, the less. Roughly:

Treat those figures as directional rather than a spec, but the pattern is well established. The trouble is that UK summers commonly sit around 55 to 70% humidity, and our hottest, stickiest days are often the most humid. So the air cooler is weakest exactly when you are most desperate for it. Above roughly 80% humidity, an evaporative cooler does almost nothing.
There is a second catch. An air cooler adds moisture to the room, and many models double as humidifiers. In a damp British summer that can leave a room feeling more clammy, not less. An air conditioner does the reverse: it removes humidity as it cools, which is a large part of why a properly cooled room feels so much more comfortable.

Air cooler vs portable air conditioner: the real decision
For most people the genuine choice is not "air cooler vs split", it is air cooler vs portable air conditioner, because both are cheap, plug-in and need no installation. This is where being honest saves you a disappointing summer.
Cooling. A portable air conditioner will cool a room by up to around 10 to 15°C to a temperature you set, in any humidity, and dry the air while it does it. An air cooler gives you a few degrees of local relief on a dry day and much less on a humid one. If your aim is a room that is reliably comfortable, only the air conditioner delivers it.
Running cost. This is the air cooler's one real win. It draws only around 80 to 150W, so it costs roughly 2 to 4p an hour to run. A portable air conditioner draws far more, around 1,000 to 1,500W, so it costs a lot more per hour (see the worked figures below). You are paying for the extra cooling.
Price to buy. Air coolers run from about £40 to £400, with most useful units around £80 to £250. Portable air conditioners run from about £300 to £1,000, with budget models sometimes from around £200 to £250. So the air cooler is cheaper to buy and to run, but it buys you less cooling.
Practicalities. An air cooler needs its tank topped up every day or two and its pad rinsed to keep mould and limescale at bay. A portable air conditioner needs a window for its exhaust hose and occasional filter cleaning. Both are noticeably noisier than a fixed split, at roughly 50 to 65 dB(A).

What it costs to run
Running costs use the Ofgem price cap for 1 July to 30 September 2026 of 26.11p per kWh. From 1 October 2026, VAT on domestic electricity is cut from 5% to 0%, which will trim these figures slightly. The sums are simple, so you can redo them for your own unit.
Air cooler, around 100W: 0.1 kW multiplied by 26.11p is about 2.6p an hour, or around 21p for an 8-hour day.
Portable air conditioner, around 1.2kW: 1.2 kW multiplied by 26.11p is about 31p an hour, or around £2.50 for an 8-hour day.
Fixed split system: the most efficient way to actually cool a room, so the lowest cost for each degree of real cooling.

When an air cooler is actually the right buy
An air cooler is not a con. It is just a specific tool for a specific job, and that job is rarely "cool a British bedroom in a heatwave". It earns its place when:
You want cheap, low-power personal cooling aimed at you, not a whole room.
You are cooling a garage, workshop or conservatory with a door or window open, where venting a portable air conditioner is awkward.
You mainly want air movement on a budget and see the odd extra degree as a bonus.
You live somewhere unusually dry, or want a unit for dry heatwave days rather than muggy ones.
If instead you want a room that is reliably comfortable through a UK summer, and especially through the humid nights, an air cooler will let you down.
