Can air conditioning give you a cold or make you ill?

Can you catch legionella from home air conditioning?
This worry causes the most alarm and deserves the clearest answer: catching Legionnaires' disease from a normal home air conditioning unit is very unlikely.
Legionnaires' disease is a serious lung infection, but it is uncommon and rarely caught at home. The NHS says it is usually picked up in places like hotels, hospitals or offices where the bacteria have got into the water supply, and that it is less common to catch it at home. You get it by breathing in tiny water droplets, an aerosol, that contain Legionella bacteria.
Typical home air con sits outside that risk. Wall-mounted splits, multi-splits and most portable units cool the air using refrigerant passing through a coil, not a water spray or a cooling tower. No water spray means none of the airborne droplets that legionella needs to spread. The recognised risk lies with cooling towers, evaporative cooling, spa pools and stagnant water systems, which is why the Health and Safety Executive aims its legionella guidance at employers, landlords and those in control of premises, rather than at householders.

The honest position is not "it is impossible", though. A neglected unit with stagnant water sitting in a drip tray or drain is the kind of place bacteria and mould can grow, so the takeaway is the same as everywhere in this guide: keep it clean and serviced and the risk stays very low.
Does air conditioning help or harm allergies and asthma?
Both, and which one you get depends on maintenance.
A well-maintained unit with a clean filter can genuinely help allergy and asthma sufferers.
