Smart and Wi-Fi air conditioning explained

What makes an air conditioner smart, how Wi-Fi and app control work, and the two ways to get it: a unit with built-in Wi-Fi, or a low-cost controller that makes almost any unit smart.

A smart air conditioner is simply one you can control over the internet, usually from an app on your phone, along with the automation that makes possible: scheduling, switching off when you leave the house, reacting to the room temperature, and voice control through Alexa, Google or Siri. Wi-Fi is the connection. "Smart" is what the app does with it.

The useful part most sales pages skip is that you have two ways to get it. You can buy a unit with built-in Wi-Fi and use the manufacturer's app, or you can add a low-cost universal controller that clips onto almost any existing unit with a remote control and makes it smart in about a minute. This guide explains both routes, what you can actually do once you are connected, whether it saves money, and where the limits are.

The dividing line is whether you are buying new or upgrading what you have. If you are choosing a new wall-mounted split anyway, built-in Wi-Fi is the natural choice and often costs little extra. If you already own a unit, or you have a cheaper one that came without an app, a universal controller is the quicker and cheaper fix.

What makes an air conditioner smart?

A standard air conditioner takes its orders from an infrared remote, the handset you point at the indoor unit. A smart air conditioner adds a Wi-Fi link so those same orders can come from an app instead, from anywhere with a signal. Once the unit is on your home network, the app can do far more than the handset ever could.

Here is what smart control actually gives you:

  • Control from anywhere. Turn the unit on from the train so the room is cool when you walk in, or switch off the one you left running in the spare room, all from your phone.

  • Scheduling and timers. Set a 7-day schedule so a bedroom cools before bedtime and stops overnight, or a home office comes on for working hours only.

  • Geofencing. The app uses your phone's location to switch the unit to an away setting when you leave and bring it back as you return, so you are not cooling an empty house.

  • Temperature and humidity automation. Controllers with a built-in sensor can hold a room at a target and react to conditions, cooling harder on a hot afternoon and easing off when the room settles. Sensibo calls this Climate React; Tado has open-window detection that pauses cooling if it senses a temperature drop.

  • Voice control. Ask Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple Siri to change the temperature or turn the unit off without touching your phone.

  • Energy monitoring. Some apps track how much the unit runs and estimate usage, and flag when the filter needs cleaning, which keeps it efficient.

Route one: built-in Wi-Fi and the brand apps

Most current smart splits from the major brands connect through the maker's own app. Each brand has its own, so it is worth knowing which one goes with which badge before you buy.

One catch to check: Wi-Fi is not automatically built into every unit at every price. Some ranges ship with it integrated; on others it is an optional plug-in adapter or dongle you buy separately. A Daikin Onecta Wi-Fi adapter (the BRP069C47) for a home unit, for example, costs around £75. So before you assume a unit is smart, confirm whether Wi-Fi is included or an added extra on that exact model.

Because these apps are tied to the brand, they tend to integrate well with the rest of that maker's kit, and Samsung's SmartThings in particular reaches across a wide smart-home range. The trade-off is that you are locked into one manufacturer's app and its quality, which varies.

Route two: a universal controller for the unit you already own

If you already have an air conditioner, or you bought a budget one without an app, you do not need to replace it. A universal smart controller is a small device that sits on the wall facing the indoor unit, connects to your Wi-Fi, and sends the same infrared signals your handset would. To the unit, it looks exactly like the remote. To you, it looks like an app.

Setup takes about a minute: power it by USB, connect it to your home Wi-Fi, and pick your air conditioner's brand or let it learn the remote. These work with almost any unit that has an IR remote, which is nearly all of them. Sensibo alone lists compatibility with more than 10,000 models, including split, portable, window and central systems.

None of the leading controllers needs a separate hub. The main practical point to weigh is subscriptions: Tado's core app is free, but its Auto-Assist features (automated geofencing and open-window detection) cost £3.99 a month or £29.99 a year, while Sensibo and Cielo advertise no mandatory subscription for core control.

A £30 to £115 controller can make a ten-year-old air conditioner smarter than a brand-new one, without touching the unit itself.

Does a smart air conditioner save money?

It can, but only by cutting waste, not by making the cooling itself cheaper. This is the honest bit most pages gloss over.

Smart control saves money in one main way: by not running the unit when it does not need to. Scheduling stops it cooling a room nobody is in, and geofencing switches it off when the house is empty and back on as you head home. That trims the hours it runs, which is where the saving comes from.

Here is a reproducible sum using the current price cap. A mid-size split drawing about 1kW of electricity while it is actively cooling costs 1 kWh at 26.11p, so about 26p an hour to run. If smart scheduling or geofencing stops it cooling an empty home for roughly three hours a day, that is 3 kWh saved, or about 78p a day. Across a 90-day summer, that adds up to around £70, purely from not cooling an empty house.

What smart control will not do is lower the cost of the cooling you genuinely need. A portable unit stays inefficient whether or not it has an app, and no schedule changes the physics of how much energy it takes to cool a room. Running-cost figures use the Ofgem price cap of 26.11p/kWh (1 July to 30 September 2026). The cap changes quarterly, with the next change due around 26 August 2026, and from 1 October 2026 VAT on domestic electricity is cut from 5% to 0%, so check the current rate before budgeting. The limitations worth knowing

Smart control is genuinely useful, but it is not flawless, and a clear-eyed view saves disappointment.

  • They need a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Almost all smart AC controllers and built-in Wi-Fi modules use the 2.4GHz band, not 5GHz. If your router only broadcasts 5GHz, or merges both bands under one name, setup can fail. This is the single most common problem people hit.

  • They depend on the maker's cloud. App control routes through the manufacturer's servers, so if their service has an outage, or an older app is discontinued, features can drop out. The unit still works from its own remote, but the smart layer is not entirely in your hands.

  • App quality varies a lot. Some brand and controller apps are polished; others are clunky or slow to fix bugs. It is worth reading recent reviews of the specific app before you commit, because you will live with it daily.

  • Some features sit behind a subscription. As above, a few of the best automations (Tado's, for instance) are paid extras rather than part of the core app.

None of these is a reason to avoid smart control. They are reasons to buy with your eyes open, check your router band, and pick a brand with a well-regarded app.

Which route should you choose?

If you are buying a new wall-mounted split anyway, choose one with built-in Wi-Fi and a well-reviewed app; the extra cost is usually small and the integration is neatest.
