Samsung Wind-Free: draught-free cooling, decoded across every tier

A conventional air conditioner cools by blowing a stream of cold air across the room, which is effective but can feel like a draught, especially in a bedroom or at a desk. Wind-Free works differently. After an initial fast-cool blast, the unit switches to Wind-Free mode and pushes the chilled air out through around 23,000 tiny micro-holes in the front panel. The result is what Samsung calls Still Air: air moving gently below 0.15 metres per second, so the room stays cool without a noticeable breeze.

The name is written a few ways, wind-free, Wind-Free and windfree, but it is one technology across the range. The upside is comfort and quiet: Wind-Free mode runs at just 23 dB(A), and Avant models drop to 16 dB(A) at their lowest setting, quieter than a library. The trade-off is that all those micro-holes collect dust and need regular cleaning, and the gentle airflow is happiest in bedrooms, studies and living rooms rather than large, humid or open-plan spaces where you want stronger air movement.

All three tiers give you the same Wind-Free micro-hole cooling, R32 refrigerant, SmartThings control and Freeze Wash self-clean. What changes as you move up is efficiency, filtration, features and price. Here is the plain-English version.

Wind-Free Comfort is the value entry point. It is rated A++ for both cooling and heating (SEER 7.9 and SCOP 4.6 on the 2.5 kW model) and comes in the widest spread of sizes, from 2.5 kW up to 6.5 kW, so it is the one to look at for a larger room. It uses a basic Easy Filter Plus without the anti-bacterial layer of the dearer tiers.

Wind-Free Avant is the mid-range sweet spot. It steps up to A+++ cooling (A++ heating) with SEER around 8.8 on the 2.5 kW model, adds the Tri-Care Filter with a Zeolite coating that captures dust, allergens and certain bacteria, and is the only tier offered in a matte black finish as well as white. It is the quietest option too, dropping to 16 dB(A) at its lowest setting on the 2.0, 2.5 and 3.5 kW sizes.

Wind-Free Elite is the flagship. It is the only tier rated A+++ for both cooling and heating, reaching SEER 9.5 and SCOP 5.1 on the 2.5 kW model, and the only one with a Motion Detect Sensor that switches to Wind-Free mode after 20 minutes without movement, then eases the temperature to save energy. The catch is choice: Elite comes in just 2.5 and 3.5 kW, so it suits bedrooms and average rooms rather than large spaces.

In short: choose Comfort for the best price or a big room, Avant for the best all-round balance of efficiency, filtration and quiet, and Elite if you want the top efficiency and smart-sensor features in a bedroom-sized unit.

As a system on its own, the indoor and outdoor units for a 2.0 to 2.5 kW Avant start from around £840 to £975 including VAT, though installation is mandatory and cannot legally be a DIY job. Supplied and fitted, a single-room Wind-Free commonly lands between £1,500 and £2,500, with higher-capacity or more complex installs able to exceed £3,000 to £3,500. Comfort tends to sit at the lower end and Elite at the upper end. Treat these as bands and always work from a fixed installer quote. Prices are correct as of July 2026.

Running costs are modest for the comfort you get. Samsung declares about 99 kWh a year for cooling on the 2.5 kW Avant, which works out at roughly £26 across a typical cooling season at the Ofgem price cap rate of 26.11p per kWh (1 July to 30 September 2026). Flat out it draws around 570 watts, about 15p an hour, and far less in Wind-Free low-power mode. Used as a room's main heat source in winter, the same unit declares about 671 kWh a year, roughly £175. The Ofgem cap changes quarterly, so check the current rate; these figures are correct as of July 2026.
