A bedroom air conditioner needs to be quiet enough to disappear once you are asleep. The World Health Organization recommends keeping bedroom noise below 30 dB(A) at night for good-quality sleep, so that is the number to aim under. A wall-mounted split system clears it comfortably: the indoor unit runs from about 18 to 21 dB(A) on its quiet setting, below a whisper, because the noisy compressor sits outside. A portable cannot match that. Even models sold as "silent" bottom out around 47 to 50 dB(A), because the compressor is in the room with you.
So the short answer: for a bedroom where sleep quality matters most, a fitted split is the genuinely quiet choice. A portable is the easy, no-install option for renters or occasional use, but you will hear it. The rule for this guide, and for your own shopping: quote and compare the indoor sound-pressure dB(A) on the lowest (quiet) fan speed. That is the figure manufacturers use for the headline "whisper quiet" claims, normally measured at 1 metre in test conditions. Treat it as a best case, because a real bedroom with hard surfaces and a higher fan speed on a hot night will be a little louder.
Split vs portable for a bedroom
This is the decision that matters most, and noise is what splits it.
A wall-mounted split has two parts: a slim indoor unit on the wall and an outdoor unit (the condenser) outside. The compressor and condenser fan, the parts that make the noise, live outside. That is why the indoor unit can run so quietly. The catch is that it needs professional installation by an F-Gas registered company, because it involves refrigerant pipework.
A portable is a single box on wheels with a hose you vent through a window. Everything, including the compressor, is inside the box and inside the room. No installation, but no escaping the noise either.

Do sleep, night and quiet modes actually help?
Yes, modestly, and they are worth using. These modes combine some or all of three things: gradually adjusting the set temperature overnight so the room does not overcool, reducing fan speed and compressor output to cut noise, and dimming the display lights.
Daikin Night set mode prevents overcooling overnight (on the Perfera it nudges the cooling set-point up by about 0.5°C across the night). A separate "Silent" button lowers indoor and outdoor sound by about 3 dB(A) each.
Mitsubishi Electric offers a Night Mode and a Quiet Mode on the MSZ-AY/AP range for minimal disturbance.
Samsung WindFree "Good Sleep" holds a comfortable sleeping temperature and diffuses air through micro-holes to avoid a cold draught, running at about 23 dB in WindFree mode.
Portable sleep modes (such as MeacoCool's) gently adjust settings overnight for quieter, more efficient running, though they cannot overcome the basic fact that the compressor is in the room.
What size air con does a bedroom need?
A useful starting point is about 0.15 kW of cooling per square metre of floor area. On that basis:
A small single bedroom of around 8 to 10 m² needs roughly 1.5 kW (about 5,000 BTU/h).
A typical UK double bedroom of around 12 to 16 m² needs roughly 1.8 to 2.5 kW (about 6,000 to 9,000 BTU/h).
To convert BTU to kW, divide by 3,412. Most bedrooms land in the 5,000 to 8,000 BTU range. Treat this as orientation only: poor insulation, large or south-facing windows, and loft conversions all push the figure up, sometimes well above the rule. Fit a wall-mounted unit on a side wall, not directly above or pointing at the bed. Air blowing straight down on a sleeper causes a cold draught and the dry-throat effect that wakes people up. A side wall lets the unit circulate cool air around the room without aiming it at your face.
How much does bedroom air con cost to buy, fit and run?
To buy and fit:
A portable costs roughly £250 to £1,000 outright with no installation. The quieter DeLonghi Pinguino "Silent" models sit around £650 to £800.
A split, supplied and fitted, typically runs £1,500 to £3,000 for a single bedroom unit. The equipment alone is around £600 to £950 for the indoor and outdoor pair, with complex pipe runs adding roughly £200 to £300. Quotes vary because the cost drivers vary: pipe run length, access, electrical work and brand all move the price, so the figure above is a band, not a fixed price.
To run: take a 2.5 kW bedroom split drawing about 0.6 kW of electrical input on a warm night. At the current Ofgem price cap of 26.11p/kWh:
0.6 kW × 26.11p = about 16p per hour.

Do I need planning permission or a certified installer?
A portable has no installation, no F-Gas issue and no planning or building-regulations implications. You plug it in and vent the hose through a window.
A split is different. Because it uses refrigerant-charged pipework, it must be installed by an F-Gas certified company (usually REFCOM registered). F-Gas is the regulation covering fluorinated refrigerant gases, and a DIY install is effectively a no-go. Installation usually includes notifiable electrical work (Part P) and may engage Building Regulations Part L.
On planning permission, the detail matters:
A cooling-only outdoor unit is generally not covered by permitted development in England and usually needs full planning permission.
Permitted development applies only to reverse-cycle units that also provide heating (air-to-air heat pumps), subject to conditions on size, siting and noise at the boundary, which is assessed under the MCS 020 standard.

On grants: comfort-cooling air conditioning installed alongside a retained gas boiler does not qualify for a grant, and portables never do. A separate £2,500 grant for air-to-air heat pumps applies in England and Wales from 28 April 2026, but only for a reverse-cycle unit that heats and cools, replacing an existing fossil-fuel or electric heating system, fitted by an MCS-certified installer. It is not "free air con", and most bedroom cooling installs will not qualify.
