Samsung WindFree Elite

The WindFree Elite is the flagship of Samsung's wall-mounted split range, and its signature feature is genuinely useful rather than a gimmick. Instead of blowing cold air at you in a directed stream, it disperses it through around 23,000 micro-holes in the front panel, so the room cools without the cold draught you feel from a conventional louvred unit. That makes it a strong pick for a bedroom, study or nursery where someone sits or sleeps close to the wall. It is also the most efficient tier in the range: A+++ in both cooling and heating, with a SEER of up to 9.5 in cooling and a class-leading SCOP of 5.1 in heating, so it is cheap to run. It is quiet, rated 23 dB(A) in Wind-Free mode, and it carries the best smart control Samsung offers, with SmartThings Wi-Fi, AI Auto Comfort and a Motion Detect Sensor that eases the unit off when the room is empty.

The catches are worth knowing before you commit. The Elite is only made in 2.5 and 3.5 kW, so it is built for small-to-medium rooms, not large open-plan spaces, and the gentle Wind-Free airflow is less suited to humid or very open rooms where you fall back on the faster conventional modes anyway. The micro-holes also need regular cleaning to keep both airflow and hygiene up, which is more upkeep than a plain unit. And Samsung's UK installer and after-sales network is smaller than Daikin's or Mitsubishi's, so expect fewer local fitters and a real premium for the flagship tier. For the right room, though, this is one of the most comfortable and quietest wall splits you can fit. If draught-free cooling and smart features matter more to you than sheer size, it earns its price.

The WindFree Elite is a wall-mounted R32 split system: one indoor unit paired with an outdoor condenser, or an indoor unit running on a Samsung multi-split outdoor unit that serves several rooms. R32 is the lower-impact refrigerant now standard on quality splits, and any work on the sealed circuit must be done by an F-Gas certified engineer, so this is a supplied-and-fitted product, not a DIY one. Because it is reverse-cycle it both cools and heats, which is why it can double as low-cost background heating in the shoulder seasons.

What sets WindFree apart is how the cold air arrives. Rather than a directed blast from a louvre, cooled air seeps out through roughly 23,000 tiny holes across the front panel, creating what Samsung calls a Still Air environment, air moving so gently you do not feel a draught. The Elite sits at the top of the three WindFree tiers. It is the only one with an A+++ heating label and the range-best SCOP of 5.1, the only one with the Motion Detect Sensor, and it pairs the Tri-Care air filter with Samsung's full smart suite: SmartThings Wi-Fi, AI Auto Comfort, Bixby, Alexa and Google Assistant, plus a Freeze Wash self-clean cycle and the battery-free SolarCell remote.

It comes in just two cooling sizes, 2.5 and 3.5 kW, which points it squarely at bedrooms, home offices, nurseries and average-sized living rooms rather than large or open-plan spaces. It suits anyone who wants the most comfortable, quietest and smartest unit in Samsung's line-up for a room they spend time in up close, and who is happy to pay a premium and keep the micro-holes clean to get it. If you need more cooling power or a bigger choice of sizes, the mid-range Avant or entry Comfort tiers stretch further up the capacity scale.

The WindFree Elite is a fitted product, so there is no single shelf price. Unit-only, the indoor and outdoor system starts from around £1,055 including VAT for the 2.5 kW and about £1,160 for the 3.5 kW from UK air con retailers, but you cannot legally fit it yourself. Installation by an F-Gas registered engineer typically adds £500 to £1,000 depending on pipe run, access and where you are, with London and the South East at the higher end. That puts a straightforward single-room Elite supplied and fitted at roughly £1,500 to £2,500, with harder installs, longer pipe runs or a multi-split setup pushing beyond £3,000. Samsung's installer network is smaller than some rivals', so get two or three fixed quotes rather than working from a headline figure.

Running costs are low, which is the point of paying for the flagship. At the July 2026 Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.11p per kWh, a 2.5 kW WindFree unit cooling flat out draws around 0.57 kW, so about 15p an hour, dropping sharply once the room holds temperature and lower still in Wind-Free low-power mode; cooling a small room across a typical summer costs only a few tens of pounds. Used as a room's main heat source, the Elite's high SCOP of 5.1 means it returns around five units of heat for every unit of electricity, far cheaper than a plug-in electric heater for the same warmth. As a reverse-cycle air-to-air heat pump it may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in England and Wales from 28 April 2026, but only if it replaces a fossil-fuel heating system and is fitted by an MCS-certified installer; comfort cooling added alongside a gas boiler does not qualify, and it is separate from the larger £7,500 air-to-water grant.
