Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-AP

The MSZ-AP, sold in the UK as Mitsubishi Electric's Elegance range, is the brand's dependable everyday wall-mounted split: the volume white unit most homes actually end up with rather than the designer MSZ-LN flagship. It is the one we would point most people towards when solid build, quiet running and long-term reliability matter more than colour finishes and top-tier gadgets. Build quality is genuinely excellent, it is quiet enough for a bedroom from around 21 dB(A), and its inverter performance is efficient, up to SEER 8.6 in cooling with an A++ energy label on the common 2.5 and 3.5 kW sizes. SEER measures seasonal cooling efficiency; higher is better. It runs on R32, the lower-impact refrigerant now standard on quality splits.

What you give up against the flagship is features and a little polish. There is no Plasma Quad Plus air purification, no 3D i-See occupancy sensor and no choice of colours, all of which are reserved for the pricier MSZ-LN, and the LN runs quieter still. The bigger catch is Wi-Fi: on the standard MSZ-AP the wireless adapter for the MELCloud app is an optional extra you have to specify and pay for, where the flagship has it built in. Like any fixed split it is supplied and fitted by an F-Gas certified engineer rather than bought off a shelf, so you work from a quote. At around 4.4 out of 5 it is a sensible premium choice: not the last word in features, but among the most reliable and quietest splits you can have fitted.

The MSZ-AP is a wall-mounted R32 split system: an MSZ-AP indoor unit paired with an MUZ-AP outdoor condenser, or an indoor unit running on a Mitsubishi multi-split outdoor unit that serves several rooms. R32 is the lower-impact refrigerant now standard on quality splits, and any work on the sealed circuit has to be done by an F-Gas certified engineer, so this is a fitted product, not a plug-in one. In UK showrooms and installer quotes you will usually see it badged as the Elegance range, the plain white volume model that sits below the designer MSZ-LN.

Think of it as Mitsubishi Electric's dependable workhorse. It does not carry the flagship's headline features, there is no Plasma Quad Plus purification, no 3D i-See occupancy sensor and no choice of colours, but it inherits the build quality and quiet running the brand is known for. It is efficient, holding an A++ energy label on the common 2.5 and 3.5 kW sizes, with seasonal figures up to SEER 8.6 in cooling and a SCOP for heating around 4.8, meaning it returns roughly four and a half units of heat for every unit of electricity. It runs quietly enough for a bedroom, from around 21 dB(A) on its lowest fan speed, though the MSZ-LN goes lower again if silence is your single priority.

It comes in a wide spread of sizes, from a 1.5 kW unit for a box room up to 7.1 kW for a large open-plan space, with 2.5, 3.5, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.1 kW the ones most homes fit. It suits anyone who wants Mitsubishi Electric reliability and quiet at a sensible price and does not need the designer finishes or advanced air-quality kit. If those extras matter, step up to the MSZ-LN; if they do not, the MSZ-AP is the value pick of the range.

The MSZ-AP is priced supplied and fitted, so there is no single shelf price. As a guide, a standard single-room install runs from roughly £1,800 for a 2.5 kW unit up to around £2,800 for a larger 6.0 or 7.1 kW model on a straightforward pipe run, with more for longer runs, high-level work or a multi-split setup. Unit-only, the indoor and outdoor pair sells from about £755 to £900 including VAT for the 2.5 kW size, but that price excludes fitting and the F-Gas work, so treat it as a component cost rather than what you will actually pay. Always work from two or three live quotes for your own home before you budget.

Running costs are low for the comfort on offer. At the July 2026 Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.11p per kWh, a 2.5 kW unit cooling flat out draws roughly 0.6 to 0.9 kW, so about 16p to 24p an hour, dropping to a few pence once the room is at temperature and the inverter modulates down. In heating the SCOP of around 4.8 means it returns close to five units of heat for every unit of electricity, far cheaper than a plug-in heater giving the same warmth. As a reverse-cycle air-to-air heat pump the MSZ-AP may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in England and Wales from 28 April 2026, but only if it replaces a fossil-fuel heating system and is fitted by an MCS-certified installer; comfort cooling added alongside a gas boiler does not qualify, and it is separate from the larger £7,500 air-to-water grant.
