Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-LN

The MSZ-LN, sold under Mitsubishi Electric's Kirigamine name, is the brand's premium wall-mounted split and one of the quietest air conditioners you can fit in a UK home. The indoor unit drops to 19 dB(A) in its lowest setting, quiet enough to sleep beside, and the 2.5 and 3.5 kW models reach A+++ in both cooling and heating. It is the unit to pick when silent bedroom running and a designer finish matter more than saving money on the box.

It is not cheap, and that is the main catch. You pay a clear premium over a plain white split such as Mitsubishi's own Elegance or a Daikin Perfera for what is, underneath the fascia, similar cooling. Efficiency also steps down on the larger 5.0 and 6.1 kW sizes, which drop to A++, so the headline figures belong to the smaller units. For a bedroom or a mid-sized living room where quiet and finish count, it earns the premium; for a big open-plan space chosen on running cost alone, a plainer unit gets you most of the way for less.

The MSZ-LN is the flagship of Mitsubishi Electric's home wall-mounted range, sold under the Kirigamine name. Like any wall split it pairs one indoor unit with an outdoor condenser, or runs as part of a multi-split system serving several rooms, and it heats as well as cools through the year. What lifts it above a standard split is the mix of near-silent running, top efficiency on the smaller sizes and a proper designer fascia in four finishes rather than the usual white plastic box.

It comes in four cooling sizes, 2.5, 3.5, 5.0 and 6.1 kW, covering rooms from a small bedroom up to a large living room or open-plan space. Its natural home is a bedroom or a well-used living room where quiet matters and the unit is on show. If you are cooling a big room purely on running cost, or you will tuck the unit out of sight, the money spent on the LN's quiet running and finish is harder to justify, and a plainer split will do much of the same job for less.

The MSZ-LN is a fitted product, so the meaningful figure is supplied and installed, not the box price. A straightforward single-room install of the 2.5 or 3.5 kW model starts from around £2,000, including the unit, pipework, labour, commissioning and F-Gas certification (the refrigerant work on a fixed split must be done by an F-Gas registered engineer by law). The larger 5.0 and 6.1 kW sizes, longer pipe runs or a multi-split setup push that up to roughly £2,800 to £3,500 or more. Unit-only, the indoor and outdoor pair sits from about £1,500. Treat every figure as indicative and work from a proper fixed quote after a site survey.

Running costs are low for its class thanks to the high efficiency. On the 2.5 kW model's A+++ figures, cooling a bedroom across a summer costs only a few pounds, and because the LN is a reverse-cycle heat pump (it runs in reverse to heat as well as cool) it can take over some winter heating at a SCOP of 5.2, turning roughly one unit of electricity into five of heat. At the July 2026 Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.11p/kWh, that efficiency is what keeps the bills down. If the LN replaces a fossil-fuel heating system and is fitted by an MCS-certified installer, it may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps in England and Wales; comfort cooling added alongside a gas boiler does not, and it is separate from the larger £7,500 air-to-water grant.
