Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-AY

The MSZ-AY is the newer of Mitsubishi Electric's two Elegance wall splits, taking over the core 2.5 to 5.0 kW sizes from the long-serving MSZ-AP. Think of it as the AP finished properly: Wi-Fi, the MELCloud app and Alexa and Google voice control are built in as standard rather than an adapter you have to specify, the quietest setting drops to 18 dB(A) on the 2.5 and 3.5 kW sizes, cooling efficiency edges up to SEER 8.7 with an A+++ label, and heating keeps working down to -20°C outside. A matt self-cleaning cabinet with a Dual Barrier coating keeps the unit and the air cleaner with less maintenance. If an installer quotes you an Elegance system today, this is almost certainly the unit on the quote.

It is still the everyday model, not the flagship: no Plasma Quad Plus purification as standard, no i-See occupancy sensor and no colour choices, all reserved for the pricier MSZ-LN, and the 4.2 and 5.0 kW sizes slip to an A++ cooling label. Like any fixed split it is supplied and fitted by an F-Gas certified engineer, so you work from a quote rather than a shelf price. One honest caveat: the AY only reached UK homes in 2023, so its long-term record rests on the proven AP platform it is built on rather than years of its own service. On what it fixes and what it shares, 4.4 out of 5 is a fair, conservative score, and at like-for-like prices it is the one to pick over the AP.

The MSZ-AY is a wall-mounted R32 split system: an MSZ-AY indoor unit paired with an MUZ-AY outdoor condenser, or, in its multi versions, an indoor unit running on a Mitsubishi Electric MXZ multi-split outdoor unit that serves several rooms. R32 is the lower-impact refrigerant now standard on quality splits, and any work on the sealed circuit has to be done by an F-Gas certified engineer, so this is a fitted product, not a plug-in one. In UK showrooms and installer quotes it is badged as the Elegance range, which it now shares with the older MSZ-AP: the AY covers the core 2.5, 3.5, 4.2 and 5.0 kW sizes, while the AP fills the ends of the range at 1.5/2.0 kW and 6.0/7.1 kW, so a whole-house quote can mix both on the same platform.

Against the MSZ-AP, the AY is a set of sensible fixes rather than a reinvention. Wi-Fi is built in as standard, with the MELCloud app and Alexa and Google voice control, where the standard AP left the wireless adapter as an optional extra to specify and pay for. The quietest fan setting drops from around 21 dB(A) to 18 dB(A) on the 2.5 and 3.5 kW sizes. Cooling efficiency edges up by about 0.1 SEER per size, taking the popular sizes to 8.7 and an A+++ label, and the heating operating range extends from -15°C to -20°C outside, useful insurance for a unit doing winter duty. The cabinet moves to a luxury matt white finish with a self-cleaning mode that dries the heat exchanger after use to prevent mould and odours, and a Dual Barrier coating on the heat exchanger, fan and air duct that stops dust and grease building up inside.

It suits anyone who wants Mitsubishi Electric build quality and quiet in a bedroom, office or living room without paying for the designer MSZ-LN, whose Plasma Quad Plus purification, i-See occupancy sensor and colour finishes the AY does without (a deeper VGKP variant adds Plasma Quad Plus as an option). If you are choosing between an AP and an AY on the same quote at similar money, take the AY: same dependable platform, fewer extras left to specify.

The MSZ-AY is priced supplied and fitted, so there is no single shelf price. Unit-only, the 2.5 kW indoor and outdoor pair with controller sells for roughly £890 to £920 including VAT, rising to roughly £1,000 to £1,400 through the 3.5 to 5.0 kW sizes, but that hardware price excludes fitting and the F-Gas work, so treat it as a component cost rather than what you will actually pay. Supplied and fitted, budget around £1,800 to £2,600 for a 2.5 or 3.5 kW unit on a standard single-room install, more for the larger sizes, longer pipe runs, high-level work or extra electrics. Costco UK also sells fixed-price installed Elegance packages with a 5-year parts warranty. As with any fitted split, the only accurate figure is a quote, so get two or three from local F-Gas registered installers before you budget.

Running costs are low for the comfort on offer. At the July 2026 Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.11p per kWh, the 2.5 kW unit cooling flat out draws a nominal 0.6 kW, so about 16p an hour, dropping to a few pence once the room is at temperature and the inverter modulates down. In heating the SCOP of up to 4.8 means it returns close to five units of heat for every unit of electricity, far cheaper than a plug-in heater giving the same warmth. As a reverse-cycle air-to-air heat pump it may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in England and Wales from 28 April 2026, but only if it replaces a fossil-fuel heating system and is fitted by an MCS-certified installer; comfort cooling added alongside a gas boiler does not qualify, and it is separate from the larger £7,500 air-to-water grant, so check GOV.UK and Ofgem for the current rules.
