Haori

The Haori is Toshiba's designer flagship: a wall-mounted split whose front is a changeable textile cover instead of the usual white plastic box. It is aimed at design-conscious homes cooling and heating a bedroom, lounge, home office or open-plan space of roughly 15 to 40 m², where a standard unit would look out of place. Behind the fabric it is a genuine performer, A+++ in both cooling and heating, quiet enough for a bedroom, with built-in Wi-Fi and strong air-purification kit.

The catch is price. You pay a clear premium over a plainer split for the same cooling, the optional covers and custom fabrics cost more again, and if raw efficiency is all you care about Toshiba's own Daiseikai 10 edges it. For buyers who want the unit to disappear into the room and will use an accredited installer to protect the warranty, it earns its place. If looks are secondary, a plainer split gives you the same comfort for less.

The Haori is a wall-mounted R32 split system: one indoor unit paired with an outdoor condenser, or an indoor unit running on a Toshiba multi-split system that serves several rooms. R32 is the low-impact refrigerant now standard on quality splits, and any work on the sealed circuit has to be done by an F-Gas certified engineer, so this is a fitted product, not a DIY one. What sets it apart is the front: instead of a moulded plastic fascia it wears a textile cover that peels and sticks, so you can match it to the room or change it later. It is an upper-mid-range designer unit rather than Toshiba's outright efficiency king, but it holds an A+++ rating in both cooling and heating and drops to 19 dB(A) in quiet mode, which is genuinely bedroom-quiet. The air-quality kit is strong for the class, with an Ultra Pure Filter that captures up to 94% of PM2.5 and a plasma ioniser, and Wi-Fi is built in as standard rather than a paid add-on. Three cooling sizes, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.6 kW, cover rooms from around 15 to 40 m².

On colours, here is the honest version, because buyers get this wrong. Every Haori comes with two fabric covers included, Dark Grey and Light Grey. Four more, Bluish Grey, Grey Beige, Dark Brown and Emerald Blue, are optional extras, and Toshiba also offers custom and own-fabric covers. So the line you sometimes see, that it comes in six standard colours, is not quite right: two are included and the rest cost more. The cover is acoustically transparent, so it does not muffle airflow or complicate cleaning.

Unit-only, the 3.5 kW Haori set sells from around £1,275 including VAT, though you cannot legally fit it yourself. Supplied and fitted, budget from roughly £1,995 for a straightforward single-room install, rising to about £2,500 to £3,000 or more for larger capacities, trickier pipe runs, optional covers or a multi-split setup. Running costs are modest for a designer unit. On the 3.5 kW model's standardised figures, cooling works out at roughly £37 a year and heating at about £231 a year at the October 2026 Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.32p per kWh. Those are comparison figures; your real bill depends on the room, how many hours you run it, your target temperature and your tariff. As an air-to-air system it heats as well as cools, but it will rarely qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which is aimed at units replacing a fossil fuel or electric heating system.
